LG is preparing to show off an array of displays at this years CES virtual expo, including what promises to be some cool looking transparent OLED monitors. However one display that’s already catching multiple eyes is a bendable 48" 4k OLED gaming monitor. They’re calling it their “Bendable CSO (Cinematic Sound OLED) display”. The pitch for such a device is fairly straightforward, with the idea being that you can enjoy movies and videos in the more traditional flat monitor, and then at the tap of a button transition to a curved display with up to 1000 mm radius for a more immersive gaming experience. Additionally this display has a 0.6 mm film exciter that turns the entire screen into a speaker, this allows for not only a thinner overall monitor, but for a more immersive experience when either watching video or playing a game since the sound comes from the screen itself.

Additionally since it’s a monitor aimed towards the gaming community it features a variable refresh rate from 40hz all the way to 120hz. While certainly not bleeding edge as refresh rates go, it remains to be seen how much appeal the transforming aspect will ultimately have for the intended market. Additionally as the actual demo has yet to go live we don’t know yet if there are any unknown issues with the transforming mechanism. Ultimately it feels more like a gimmick than anything else, but it remains to be seen how much demand there actually is for what seems to be a niche device such as this. Who knows maybe LG is creating a new market and in a few years we’ll all have transforming displays.
